(KNSI) – Waite Park Council approved a measure at Monday’s meeting to extend the mayoral term length to four years, double what it is now.
The move brings Waite Park’s election schedule in line with that of other cities in the St. Cloud area, including Sartell and Sauk Rapids. Only about a quarter of Minnesota cities elect mayors to a two-year term.
The measure was first proposed by incumbent Ken Schmitt earlier this year. He believes that making the mayor’s term equal to those of the council will allow the city’s top politician to become more engaged with the community through their official duties rather than just as campaigners.
The move will go into effect during the 2026 election.
