(KNSI) – Peak color has arrived in parts of northern Minnesota. Mother Nature’s annual show of fiery orange, red, and yellow leaves has taken over from the North Dakota border to the shores of Lake Superior.

Some of the best color right now can be found at Old Mill and Lake Bronson State Parks in the northwest, Schoolcraft and Scenic State Parks in the Iron Range, and the always popular Gooseberry Falls State Park on the North Shore. Split Rock Lighthouse and Manitou State Park are likely past their peak, as the first areas of the state to reach that designation.

Lake of the Woods, Upper and Lower Red Lakes and Mille Lacs Lake are all at 50%-75% of peak, which characterizes most of the rest of the northern third of the state. Everywhere north of St. Cloud is at least at 25%-50% of peak, even with recent record warm temperatures.

The southern half of Stearns and Benton Counties, plus most of Sherburne County, is stuck at 25%-50% of peak. As the days continue to get shorter, the change will occur, whether temperatures return to normal or not. Expect momentum to begin gathering steam over the next one to two weeks.
