(KNSI) – Cold Spring City Council is set to approve an extension on Wednesday to the special use permit for McDonald’s, as the world’s most popular restaurant franchise continues to be stalled in efforts to get a location in town.
The hangup is with the design for the drive-through. The city wants an extra high fence that would keep headlights from shining into neighboring properties. McDonald’s has expressed interest in keeping the restaurant open late, particularly on weekends. The location, at 200 3rd Street South, would be roughly 5,000 square feet with curbside pickup and a drive-through, in keeping with the current model used by the franchise chain.
In an interview with KNSI News last September, when the permit was first approved, Administrator Kris Dockendorf said city staff, architects, and engineers had already invested nine to ten months of work to get the idea over its first hurdle.
The extension would renew for another year, until September 25th, 2026. That will give the company another year to submit a building permit for the site.
Right now, the nearest Mickey D’s to Cold Spring is either St. Joseph or Waite Park.
The council’s other big item on the agenda is to formally approve the preliminary tax levy for the 2026 budget.
The meeting begins at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall.
