(KNSI) – St. Cloud’s Adopt-a-Drain program will be part of National Stormwater Awareness Week.
The Central Minnesota Water Education Alliance says the initiative asks the community to “adopt” a nearby storm drain and be responsible for its maintenance by regularly clearing it of leaves, trash, and other debris. Officials explained that with regular cleaning, it prevents localized flooding while also protecting rivers, lakes, creeks, ponds, and wetlands from harmful pollutants that would otherwise flow in during storms. It does not require any special skills or equipment.
Community members interested in participating can begin by selecting a storm drain in their area and committing to regular maintenance, with particular attention needed before and after rainfall when debris accumulation typically peaks. The program also encourages the organization of neighborhood cleanup events that can be coordinated with ongoing Adopt-a-Drain activities.

National Stormwater Awareness Week is scheduled for September 22nd through the 26th to encourage participation in programs such as Adopt-a-Drain to help draw attention to conservation efforts aimed at protecting water resources.
