(KNSI) – Registration has opened up for this year’s St. Cloud Walk to End Alzheimer’s event on October 11th at Lake George.

It is one of over 600 walks that will take place nationwide throughout the fall. Expect people from all different backgrounds. Some come every year. Others will be first time participants. Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter Vice President of Development Ashley Snell says pre-registration is not required but strongly encouraged.

She explains, “It’s super family-friendly. We’d like people to register in advance so that you have access to a fundraising website and get all the event details. But you can also just show up on walk day, too, and we can get people registered.”

Snell talks about what is unique about the St. Cloud walk. The Promise Garden ceremony involves everyone coming together with flower in hand to show how they are connected by Alzheimer’s. “The different colors of the flowers mean, or specify, what your connection is to the disease. So, purple is that you have lost someone. Yellow is that you’re a caregiver. Blue is that you have Alzheimer’s or dementia, and then orange is that you are kind of just there in support of a world without Alzheimer’s.”

The fundraising goal this year is $145,000. Organizers are already over 40% of the way there. Proceeds are split between local programs and national research into new medicines to help make progress against Alzheimer’s.
