(KNSI) – CentraCare will run a free prostate cancer screening event on September 18th at the Coborn Cancer Center.

The event is available to men between 45 and 70 years old. The screening consists of a physical exam and a blood test, which looks for a protein called the prostate-specific antigen. It involves a blood draw from the arm. An elevated level could be a sign of infection, a swelling of the prostate gland, known as BPH, or cancer.

Registration is required for the tests. Those interested should call 320-229-5100 to make a reservation.

The American Cancer Society says one in eight men is diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, making it one of the most common forms of cancer, on par with breast cancer for women.
