(KNSI) – The location for the 78th Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener in May 2026 has been revealed.
Stillwater and the St. Croix River have been selected to host the ceremonial start to the open water fishing season. The event will be on May 8th and 9th next year. Stillwater has a picturesque waterfront downtown, barely a half hour from the heart of the Twin Cities, but it has never hosted the Governor’s Fishing Opener before.
The St. Croix River is a nationally designated Wild and Scenic River, and a popular recreation spot. The opener will only help to promote the excellent fishing opportunities on the wide, twisting river that serves as the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Walleye, musky, lake sturgeon, flathead and channel catfish, white and smallmouth bass are all available in abundance for fishermen to chase. The opener is a combined effort put on by Explore Minnesota, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the host city.
Explore Minnesota Executive Director Bennett McGinty says, “Stillwater offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, vibrant downtown charm, and rich history, all set against the stunning backdrop of the St. Croix River. We’re thrilled to work with local partners to showcase the area’s tourism appeal and kick off the summer season in a place that truly embodies the spirit of Minnesota hospitality and recreation.”
Governor Tim Walz adds, “This event provides an opportunity to celebrate what makes Minnesota special and bring Minnesotans together to experience our exceptional fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities.”
