(KNSI) – Governor Tim Walz has called for a special election to fill the vacancy left by the assassination of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman.

The writ lays out a timeline where candidates will need to have paperwork filed by Tuesday, July 22nd, with a primary being held on August 12th in line with the rest of the state. Hortman represented District 34B, which is spread between parts of Anoka and Hennepin Counties.

The special election would not wait until November to determine a winner. Walz has scheduled it for Tuesday, September 16th. The person selected by voters would fill out the remainder of Hortman’s current term, and then have to run again.

It will be the first new representative for the district since the mid-2000s. Hortman and her husband were killed on June 14th in an attack that also targeted state Senator John Hoffman and others.
