(KNSI) – A new study reveals it costs less to live in St. Cloud than the average American city, but it is more expensive than most of our Minnesota counterparts.
The overall index for the city is 96.6, with average being 100. Minneapolis checked in at 91.9 with St. Paul just below 93. Mankato, a comparable city in greater Minnesota, was at 93.5. St. Cloud did best in the grocery category. Our worst-performing area was healthcare at 118.
Locally, the index is calculated by the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce. It measures the price of 61 different items three times a year.
Among other cities in the upper Midwest, St. Cloud was lower than Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Rapids City, South Dakota. The index was measured in 251 locations across America. Manhattan in New York City topped the list at over 232. It held a significant lead over the runner-up, Honolulu, Hawaii. The least expensive cities were Harlingen, Texas, Tupelo, Mississippi, and Decatur, Illinois. All were 20% or more below the national average.
