(KNSI) – The man who died Monday night following a domestic dispute at a home in Paynesville ultimately took his own life.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s preliminary investigation says police were called to the home of 80-year-old Larry Alstead about 9:00. Alstead’s wife explained to investigators he had assaulted her and was now armed and locked in the basement. When police attempted to arrest him, he showed up at the bottom of the stairs with a gun. An officer fired on Alstead twice before Alstead shot himself. Life saving measures were taken at the scene, but he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner’s report says Alstead died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to a press release from the BCA, they recovered a gun and shell casings at the scene. The officers involved were wearing body cameras at the time.

The investigation is ongoing. When complete, the BCA will present its findings without recommendations on charges to the Stearns County Attorney’s Office for review.
