(KNSI) – ConnectAbility of MN in Waite Park is holding its inaugural Break the Barrier 5K so people facing mobility, mental health, and other physical challenges can feel what it’s like to cross the finish line.

At 8:00 a.m. Saturday, it’s a first-of-its-kind fundraiser for the nonprofit, featuring three events. There will be a 5K race, a 5K walk or roll, and a 1K option. The cost is $20 for the 5K events and $5 for the 1K run. Participants will start and end at the organization’s office at 2901 3rd Street South.

The group’s Social Media and Impact Writer, Kali Holt, told KNSI News the money will help them reach their organization’s mission. “We are trying to raise awareness for people with visible and invisible barriers just to be able to reach their potential.”

To demonstrate that idea, Holt says the nonprofit came up with the concept of a race for all. “It honestly covers everyone who has any type of barrier that stops them from being able to participate and might need a little extra help. This entire race is flat and available for people that need those mobility devices.”

The route allows people in electric wheelchairs, regular wheelchairs, or someone who uses a cane or walker to take part without worrying about peaks, valleys, or rough terrain. The chosen track’s level landscape also makes it easy to make accommodations for anyone with other physical or mental challenges, such as hearing or vision loss, autism, Down syndrome, or the loss of a limb, to be a part of a race.

Some of the programs ConnectAbility operates include taking donated medical equipment and getting it to someone who can use it. They also help find technology to make life better, such as hearing aids or special TV remotes for those with limited dexterity.

People can preregister for the race until the end of the day or the morning of the event. To sign up or for more information, click here.
