(KNSI) – Two teenagers are in trouble after allegedly trying to steal vehicles from an apartment parking lot in St. Cloud.
Police were called to the 1400 block of Washington Memorial Drive on Sunday evening for two people attempting to take a Hyundai. When they arrived, they saw the two suspects flee on foot. Police chased them down and arrested the 14-year-old boys.
The teenagers allegedly smashed the vehicle window and damaged its ignition system in an attempt to take it. On Monday morning, police were called back to the same parking lot by a different victim who stated they found their Hyundai had a broken window and damage to the steering column. Investigators say the same two juvenile suspects are believed to be behind that incident.
Both boys were arrested on suspicion of tampering with a motor vehicle, attempted motor vehicle theft, and felony damage to property.
The arrest comes just days after the SCPD warned area car owners about a surge in thefts targeting Kia and Hyundai brand vehicles due to a security defect in them. Manufacturers are aware of the thefts and have released software upgrades and deterrents for certain models. Police suggest contacting the local dealerships to see if a vehicle qualifies. Steering wheel locks can also prevent theft as it is a strong visual deterrent and an added layer of security.
