(KNSI) — There are several opportunities around the St. Cloud area for the public to stop and remember fallen soldiers on Memorial Day.
American Legion Post 277 will hold its Memorial Day Service outside the Sartell Community Center starting at 9:00 a.m. with music provided by the Sartell High School Marching Band. Seating will be limited, so guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.
The St. Cloud VA Medical Center will host a ceremony in the Building 96 parking lot. The free event is planned for 11:00 a.m. The St. Cloud Municipal Band will provide entertainment. The public is encouraged to attend.
The Disabled American Veterans and VFW Post 428 in St. Cloud are joining together to add tablets to the monument outside. The event is on Monday, May 26th, at 1:00 p.m. with a bugler/taps, a flyover, an honor guard, special guests, and a 21-gun salute. The keynote speaker will be former Minnesota and National VFW Surgeon General Dr. James Tourila. The VFW will also serve hamburgers, brats, chips, and drinks afterward. It is free to attend, but donations will be accepted.
The monument has 1,458 names listed, with room for another 532 names on the three newly added stone tablets. Attendees will have the chance to secure their space for family and friends. After more names are placed on the memorial, it will be formally dedicated again in the fall.
Any veteran, living or deceased, regardless of when they served, as long as they were honorably discharged, can have their name etched into the monument. The cost is $130 per person and is tax deductible. The post asks donors to provide a name and branch of service for the person, and it is open to those still on active duty. Veterans can put their names on the monument if they choose.
