(KNSI) – Explore Minnesota has named a local restaurant one of the best places in the state to get a burger.
Before Val and Kathleen Henning bought the building, Val’s Rapid Serv was once an abandoned Pure Oil gas station. The family converted it into a limited menu, fast food takeout restaurant, and opened the doors on Memorial Day, May 30th, 1959. The 490 square foot space on East St. Germain Street has been delivering big flavor ever since.
Val retired in 1979, and the restaurant was bought by Bill and David Henning. The Henning family still owns and operates it as Val’s, serving hundreds of loyal customers, but its iconic status also draws in new faces each day.
The menu is still limited to juicy burgers (single, double, or triple!), fish sandwiches and generous servings of hot French fries, washed down with an icy cold pop or a cool creamy shake that come in classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, butterscotch and mint, but also fun flavors like birthday cake, cotton candy, dreamsicle, piña colada and s’mores. They also have candy shakes with chunks of Oreo cookie, Reese’s Pieces, or Butterfinger.
Once open just six months a year, as its popularity grew, so did the hours and days of operation. Diners can grab a classic Val’s meal seven days a week from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
