(KNSI) — Today opens the two week filing period for those wanting to run for the Stearns County Board of Commissioners seat in District 4.

The seat was left vacant last month after the abrupt retirement of Commissioner Leigh Lenzmeier following legal wrangling over his residency and mental capacity to fulfill his duties.

His wife, Alice Lenzmeier, filed for and received emergency guardianship over her husband in early April, saying he was suffering from cognitive decline with rapid acceleration. It was made public through that process that Lenzmeier hadn’t lived in Stearns County for a year and was instead in a memory care facility in Buffalo, which is located in Wright County. He had instead attended county board meetings via Zoom, or someone had driven him back and forth.

The filing period closes June 3rd. A special primary election has been set for August, with the general election set for November.
