(KNSI) – Minnesota’s unemployment rate is up to 3.2%, according to April figures released by the state’s Department of Employment and Economic Development.
The bump is a result of two factors. Payrolls were reduced by 1,300 positions statewide, and more people entered the labor force looking for work. Despite the change, Minnesota remains well ahead of national figures. The country’s unemployment rate is 4.2%. Minnesota’s labor force participation rate is 68.2%, ahead of 62.6% nationally.
The sectors gaining the most jobs in April were Trade, Transportation, and Utilities and Leisure and Hospitality (both up 1,600). Education and Health Services fell by 2,400, and Professional and Business Services shed 2,000.
DEED breaks down job growth among metro areas on a non-seasonally adjusted basis. Fueled by the Mayo Clinic’s expansion, Rochester continues to run away from the rest of the pack with 5.1% job growth. St. Cloud has logged 957 net hirings in the past year, or a 0.9% bump. That is a better pace than the Twin Cities, Duluth, Mankato, or the Fargo-Moorhead area.
