(KNSI) – The St. Cloud VA Medical Center is offering a program to help veterans heal with its therapeutic fly fishing program.

The launched about a month ago and is overseen by outpatient recreational therapist Dr. Jim Newman, who told KNSI he brought it with him from his prior VA post in Virginia, where it proved quite popular. “This whole concept of getting into therapeutic fly fishing was started at Walter Reed (Medical Center) by some local fly fishermen. And it has grown into some national programs, but they’ve always been affiliated with a VA.”

Newman explained how the six-week fly fishing program helps him. “The mindfulness of it, the sensory input and all that kind of stuff. For PTSD and depression and things like that. I like to say for me, it stops the voices.”
