(KNSI) — Minneapolis police are investigating after five people were shot – three of them fatally – in a mass shooting overnight in what authorities are calling a “likely targeted attack” and potentially gang related.

Officers responded to the scene shortly before midnight after three ShotSpotter activations near East 25th Street and Bloomington Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered five victims with gunshot wounds. Two men and one woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Another man and woman were transported to a hospital, with the male victim reported to be in “grave condition” as of early this morning.

About an hour later and five blocks south of the original scene, police were called to the sound of shots fired. No victims were found, but investigators say they collected shell casings at that scene. A short time later, a man was dropped off at another hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Police have not said whether the second scene is connected with the first, but they are calling it “highly suspicious.”

Police have recovered what they described as a “substantial amount of evidence” and are reviewing footage from multiple surveillance cameras. All victims were adults, though their names and ages have not yet been released. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner is expected to provide official identification along with cause and manner of death in the coming days.

No arrests have been made.
