(KNSI) – A man who had been arrested in England over the death of Minnesota native Adam Johnson will not be charged.
Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers on October 28th, 2023, when his neck was sliced by a defenseman for the opposing team in a collision. South Yorkshire Police had arrested Matt Petgrave for possible manslaughter charges.
Tuesday, the Crown Prosecution Service announced it had finally made a decision not to bring charges, even though it described the play as “a shocking and deeply upsetting incident.” They explained why they passed on the case, “Following a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all the evidence by the CPS, we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offense and so there will not be a prosecution.”
Johnson grew up in Hibbing and played college hockey for the Bulldogs, where he shone. In 2016-17, Johnson was second on the team with 18 goals and 37 points, including the game-winner in overtime of the NCAA West Regional final against Boston University.
Johnson signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins and eventually went to Europe and then England to play professionally.
