(KNSI) – May 5th is Melanoma Monday, and CentraCare is celebrating by hosting a free skin cancer screening clinic to combat the risks locally.
The St. Cloud-based medical provider says it will conduct the examinations on Monday and Tuesday of next week at the CentraCare Plaza Clinic of Dermatology. Space is limited, and only those who haven’t seen a specialist in the last three years are eligible.
According to CentraCare, skin cancer rates in Stearns County continue to rise, with the National Cancer Institute reporting 34.9 cases per 100,000 people. Doctors say the trend is alarming and emphasize the importance of regular screenings. Some tips for residents include wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, wearing protective clothing like UV-blocking shirts, avoiding tanning beds at all costs, and limiting sun exposure during peak hours.
While the exam is free, an appointment is needed by calling 320-229-4924. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Melanoma Monday is a campaign by the American Academy of Dermatology to raise awareness about skin cancer and encourage people to get screened.
