(KNSI) – Rains in southeastern Minnesota helped reduce the drought statewide. Over 18% is now back to normal soil conditions.
The best improvement was seen from the Twin Cities Metro to Winona County. Cook County in the Arrowhead region also broke free from abnormally dry conditions. Things were much calmer in central Minnesota, with Benton and Sherburne Counties remaining drought-free. About half of Stearns County, from Melrose west, is abnormally dry.
A splotch of severe drought remains in the headwaters region of the Mississippi River. Moderate drought is focused mostly in the state’s northern third, from St. Louis County to Kittson County. There is also a ring centered in Lyon County in the southwest.
Heavy rain and possibly severe weather will batter much of the state on Sunday and Monday, which could mean the next update looks much different when the U.S. Drought Monitor releases it on Thursday, May 1st.
