(KNSI) – Over 10,000 people were hired in Minnesota in the month of March.
The state’s Department of Employment and Economic Development classifies the job growth as strong. Payrolls jumped by 0.4%, or four times faster than the national rate.
Even with 10,700 positions being filled, the unemployment rate went up to 3.1%. That’s due to a mix of seasonal factors, annual revisions, and more people looking for work. Spring tends to see extra hiring for construction and other industries that take a break while the snow falls, which is accounted for when evaluating the data.
Local and state governments added 1,500 jobs, which will hopefully blunt any firings at the federal level. Officials say recent edicts from Washington, D.C., to trim payrolls had not yet taken effect last month.
On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the St. Cloud area saw 518 hirings compared to March 2024. The figure is better than Duluth or Mankato, both of which experienced net layoffs, but it trails Rochester and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro.
Rochester’s employment change over the past year was 4.7%, one of the best in the country. The city is enjoying a boom related to a large expansion at the Mayo Clinic, one of its primary employers.
