(KNSI) – The first egg of the season can be spotted on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources FalconCam.
This year’s pair features a female from St. Cloud. The 12-year-old bird has captured the attention of thousands of viewers from across the state and beyond.
Last week, courtship rituals were on full display, and the first semblances of a nest were apparent. Starting on Monday night, there was a noticeable addition to the scrape. What looks like a large brown pebble sat high and proud on the screen. In the day since, the falcon has carefully tended to the egg, even perching on top of it to keep it warm.
Falcons usually lay eggs in groups, so more are likely on the way. Last year, the love birds cared for four different eggs. Of those, three hatched, and two survived.
What’s certain is that this year’s journey is only beginning, and viewers will continue to monitor it with an eagle eye. The DNR set up this year’s nest box in downtown St. Paul.
