(KNSI) — Central Minnesota may get clipped by a major winter storm over the next 24 to 36 hours.
Forecasters say for our area, rain will start before transitioning to snow by midnight. Meeker, Sherburne, and Wright counties are under a winter weather advisory from 6:00 Tuesday night until noon Wednesday. Up to 1″ to 3″ of snow are possible, with winds potentially gusting as high as 45 miles an hour.
The western edge of the primary band of snow is setting up just to the east of the St. Cloud area. Higher values are possible if it shifts west, and the chances for higher totals decline with an eastward shift. It also depends on how long it takes for the rain to change over to all snow.
The Twin Cities metro area and counties to the southwest are under a winter storm warning starting at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday until 3:00 p.m. Wednesday. Snow accumulations between 4” and 7” are possible in that area, along with wind gusts of up to 50 miles an hour.
A blizzard warning is out for a chunk of southern Minnesota from Fairmont, Mankato, Faribault, Red Wing, and Rochester. The warning starts at 9:00 p.m. as whiteout conditions helped along by 55 mile an hour winds are expected and will make travel difficult. Those in the blizzard warning are being urged to stay home. The warning expires at 3:00 Wednesday afternoon.
Another update is expected by 6:00 tonight.
