(KNSI) – A school board member and man long associated with St. Cloud Area School District 742 is stepping down.

Bruce Hentges worked for the district for 35 years, between 1973 and 2008. During that time, he was a teacher and a football and baseball coach at Apollo and Tech High Schools. Hentges also served as activities director and assistant principal at both schools, transportation director, and the principal at Westwood Elementary School. He was one of the founders of the District 742 Local Education and Activities Foundation and served as executive director from 2008 to 2023.

Henges told KNSI News he’s sad he can’t continue. “It’s a it’s a real disappointment for me, at this time. My career and really my life, has been focused around District 742, public education, both as an employee and also as executive director of our education foundation for many years.”

He said the school is really where his passion is. Henges explained he resigned from the school board due to health concerns that came to light over the last few weeks. “I have a family history of heart issues, having lost my father at just age 45 and two brothers who passed away from heart ailments prematurely. And so, upon talking to the doctor, and of course my wife, it’s time for me to step away and maybe slow down a little bit.”

The 75-year-old served two terms on the board between 2008 and 2012 and again in 2014 through 2018 before deciding to run again in 2024.

To take his place, District 742 is bringing back Al Dahlgren. He served three terms on the board before failing to win reelection last year. Dahlgren finished in fifth place with 13.13% of the vote.

The school board will declare a vacancy at Wednesday night’s meeting and will likely hold an election in the fall to fill the remaining three years of Hentges’ term, which expires on January 9th, 2029.
