(KNSI) – A viral post making a shocking claim about a serial killer on the loose in Alexandria is a scam.

The police department says the goal of the post is to get people to share it before initiating what is being described as a “bait and switch.” The scammers can change the post to an advertisement or a plea for donations to a nonexistent charity.

Alexandria Police list red flags to consider when trying to decide if a sensational post is accurate and worth sharing. Avoid posts that do not come from verified law enforcement accounts and are rife with vague hashtags like the name of a city. Other tip offs include posts that don’t contain contact information if you spot the person on the loose. Also, pay attention to grammar and spelling mistakes and check to see if comments are turned off.

Lastly, if you come across a misleading post, report it to the social media platform you are using, whether Facebook, X, or Instagram.
