(KNSI) — The Benton County Sheriff’s Office has released its annual report highlighting the “Big Three” most reported crimes of 2024.
Domestic assault topped the list this year, which experts say reflects the challenges of addressing abusive relationships. The relationships often begin without physical violence but escalate over time as abusers exert increasing control.
Sheriff’s officials stress the importance of support for victims. Organizations like Anna Marie’s Alliance in St. Cloud offer shelter, safety planning, and services for those looking to escape domestic violence. The sheriff’s office says law enforcement across the county is committed to holding abusers accountable and connecting victim survivors with resources.
Theft ranked second among reported crimes, with many cases stemming from crimes of opportunity. Properties such as hunting land and abandoned farmsteads have been frequent targets for theft this year. Officials say the public can make theft more difficult for potential criminals by locking vehicles, outbuildings, and homes, keeping valuables out of sight and properties are well-lit. They say to secure unoccupied buildings, particularly in rural areas, through monitoring or removing valuable items. Strategies like neighbor alerts and surveillance systems can help deter criminals.
Harassment remains the third most reported crime. The sheriff’s office says, while interpersonal conflicts are a common part of life, escalating disputes rarely lead to resolution.
Solutions for handling harassment include obtaining harassment restraining orders, blocking communication with those causing the problems, and involving police when necessary. For severe cases involving stalking or assault, the sheriff’s office says is prepared to act decisively.
The sheriff’s office uses the data to raise awareness and share prevention strategies to keep the public safe.
