(KNSI) — Snow lovers are going to like this short term forecast as the National Weather Service says central Minnesota is in line for accumulating snow tonight.

Forecasters say confidence continues to increase for the potential of a band of three to six inches of snow, mostly along and north of the Interstate 94 corridor. They do caution there’s still some uncertainty in exactly where the snow will fall and how wide the band of snow will be.

Snow will start in western Minnesota around midnight and then spread eastward. The greatest chances for snow around St. Cloud ramp up after 11:00 p.m. tonight. Moderate snow rates of around half an inch an hour are expected during the morning drive on Thursday. Some heavier snow with rates near an inch an hour is sometimes possible. The storm should exit by about suppertime on Thursday.

In its wake, gusty northwest winds will develop. That is going to mess up travel from blowing snow. Wind chills will also fall to near or below zero Thursday night and into Friday morning.

Saturday, a warming trend begins as we see highs in the teens and then the twenties on Sunday and in the 30s to start the week of Christmas.
