(KNSI) – The Stearns County Parks Department is feeling thankful this holiday weekend.
Officials say they will show their gratitude to visitors from throughout the year by opening up Quarry Park on Thursday and Friday for free, no parking pass needed. Quarry Park and Nature Preserve is one of the most popular sites in the Stearns County system. It’s located in Waite Park, not far from The Ledge Amphitheater.
Quarry Park was bought by the county in 1992 and opened as a recreation area six years later. It gets more than 150,000 visitors annually. In the summer, people flock to Quarry Number 2 to cliff dive into a pool over 100 feet deep. At this time of year, expect to find them hiking among dormant prairie and forest land, bare limbs waiting for a coating of snow.
For those who are taking advantage of the free parking, bundle up. High temperatures are expected to be in the teens on Thanksgiving and the following day. Winds will gust in from the northwest at around 10 miles per hour.
For lovers of the outdoors, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is hosting a free park day on Friday, allowing access to all 73 state parks and recreation areas.
