(KNSI) – Thanks to a generous donation, St. Cloud Technical & Community College is opening a space to help first-generation students succeed.

The J.A. Wedum Foundation is launching a public campaign featuring a $2 million match to help open the Wedum Center for Student Success. According to a press release, the center will be a dynamic new campus space combined with a comprehensive plan to encourage first-generation students to stay in school and get a degree. It will work by using a cohort model to maintain student accountability, provide advice, and connect kids to services.

SCTCC has around 2,800 first-generation students with about half its population from rural Minnesota and the greater St. Cloud area.

A reception will take place Wednesday, December 4th, at 10:15 a.m. in the SCTCC Heartland Building at 1520 Whitney Court. The event will be on the second floor of the building, where the center will be located.
