(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Area School Board has unanimously approved going to the voters for classroom and athletic facility improvements at Apollo High School.
The referendum is broken into two questions. The first asks for $50 million to upgrade the 54-year-old building. The district says it needs to address safety and security concerns, including the construction of a secure entrance (Apollo is the only school in the district without a controlled entrance), adding a storm shelter, and fire safety updates. The referendum will also include expanding the kitchen and serving areas, improving career and technical education, and modernizing the music, art, and science classrooms.
Question two asks for $15 million to build an indoor athletic complex. It will include a full-size soccer field that could also be used for lacrosse, football, softball, and baseball. It would also have golf simulators. Youth sports would also be able to rent out the space.
The estimated price tag is $65 million for both and would cost the owner of a $250,000 home $39.96 a year over the next 20 years. If only question one is approved, that gets lowered to $50 million, costing an average homeowner $28 a year.
Question one must pass first in order for question two to pass.
The Sauk Rapids-Rice School Board also approved going to the voters for upgrades on February 11th. They’re asking for a new outdoor activity complex at the high school. Find out more about that proposal by clicking here.
