(KNSI)—Officials with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources want hunters to prioritize safety during firearms season.
Conservation Officer Adam Stennett tells KNSI that some of the most dangerous aspects of hunting involve climbing into the deer stand. This applies both to you personally and to your equipment.
“Make sure that you unload it before you try to bring it up into the tree. The absolute best way is either use a rope, laying it around the butt stock of that rifle, and as you pull it up, the muzzle is pointed to the ground.”
Another option is to a hoist from a store. Whatever you do, don’t try to carry it in one hand while you climb up the tree. Stennett wants people to appreciate the threat that a tree fall poses.
“Make sure that you’re using your good three points contact on your way in and out. Wear a safety harness as well. Falls out of a tree stand are probably some of the biggest injuries that occur during the deer hunt season.”
Stennett also recommends always wearing a bright hunter’s vest and consulting the rules and regulations book if you have any questions.
The firearms season in central Minnesota runs from November 9th to the 17th. In 2023, over 126,000 deer were taken with a rifle. Expectations are for more this fall. Practicing proper safety techniques helps ensure you can participate.
