(KNSI) — Stearns County officials are celebrating a resounding yes vote on a 3/8-cent sales tax to fund a new justice center.
The measure was a success Tuesday, passing with 62.3% in favor. The county commissioners had voted to move ahead with a facility outside of downtown in the summer, with the only question remaining whether it would be paid for by a sales tax or an increase in property taxes.
An aggressive information blitz by officials showed that roughly 55% of inmates at the jail live outside the county, and a sales tax would more fairly fund the new facility. If property tax was used, the burden would have fallen solely on county residents. The difference for the average household was estimated at about $100 in extra taxes per year.
Administrator Mike Williams says, “Thanks to the residents of Stearns County for recognizing the need for improved public safety infrastructure and the best way to pay for it.” He adds, “Our focus now is on responsible planning and execution to bring the region a modern, safe, efficient, affordable, and effective justice system.”
A press release notes that the final schematic design is on track to be approved on December 17th. The measure allowed the county to raise up to $325 million if needed, but that figure should crystallize soon.
Staff are also working on purchasing property, either in St. Cloud proper or near the current city limits. The land would then need to be annexed to the city from a surrounding township.
The sales tax takes effect April 1, 2025, and construction should be underway late next year.
