(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Planning Commission has approved new parking requirements for residential developments.

No one spoke at Tuesday night’s public hearing on reducing the standard of two off-street parking spaces per apartment, home or townhome to one. The change also allows driveways where people can park in tandem to count as two spaces. The changes would only apply to new construction.

Officials say cities across the country are considering reducing the number of off-street parking spaces to help developers lower the cost of construction for new housing. Census data shows that around a third of St. Cloud residents have one vehicle or no car.

The proposed change will now go to the city council for final approval.
