(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is celebrating the arrival of peak color in some regions of the state.

Integrated Public Relations Supervisor Sara Berhow tells KNSI Radio that St. Cloud residents are a short car ride from a dazzling display. “We haven’t had a lot of color change in central Minnesota, around St. Cloud, but if you go not too far north, you can see some color. We’re seeing peak colors reported around Lake Mille Lacs, Duluth area, some of the spots along the North Shore. And then some spots in northwest Minnesota.”

Fall color is late locally, but that doesn’t mean it won’t come at all. Berhow notes that the change is influenced heavily by the date on the calendar, more so than short-term weather patterns.

“We can predict fall colors within about a two-week time span pretty easily. And the reason for that is that the number one driver of when the leaves change is reduced hours of daylight. That part is very predictable. It’s those variances within that two-week time period that can be based on temperature.”
