(KNSI) — A suspect is in custody after police say he stole an SUV right in front of the owner and a St. Paul police officer.
It happened Sunday at about 6:20 p.m. after a driver was stopped near 7th Street and Jefferson Avenue south of downtown for suspected driving under the influence. That driver was performing field sobriety tests when a man jumped into the driver’s seat of the Lincoln Navigator and sped off.
The SUV was found just over two hours later. Officers tried to make a stop, but the driver allegedly led police on a chase that ended southwest of Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport near Cedar and Longfellow Avenue. The driver was taken into custody at gunpoint just before 9:00.
There is no word on whether the initial driver was cited.
