(KNSI) – Following weeks without rain, and a long spell of warmer than normal weather, the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued a Red Flag Warning for today.

It is in effect from 11:00 this morning until 8:00 tonight. Forecasters say critical fire weather conditions will exist due to strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures.

A dry cold front will cause the winds to pick up and significantly lower humidity levels. Winds will start from the south and then shift and increase out of the northwest behind the front, with gusts of 25 to 30 miles an hour possible. Relative humidity values will drop to the teens in some areas as highs reach the mid-80s in central Minnesota. The Red Flag Warning covers areas most likely to experience the strongest winds and lowest humidity simultaneously.

Any fires that do start are likely to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
