(KNSI) — Members of the Republican National Committee have fired off a letter to top election officials regarding election integrity after approximately 1,000 noncitizens may have been improperly registered to vote under the automatic voter registration process.
Original communication revealed the RNC, Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon, and Department of Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson had been going back and forth for a month after the RNC contacted top state officials to ask why a noncitizen living in the state legally received a primary ballot even though they were not registered to vote.
The Minnesota Legislature passed, and Governor Tim Walz signed the Drivers License for All bill into law in 2023, which allowed noncitizens of any immigration status to get a license. Shortly after that, the Democracy for the People Act was also signed into law, which automatically registers people to vote through the Driver and Vehicle Services, which is under the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Critics warned it would open a can of worms and allow illegals to vote in U.S. elections.
The follow up letter accuses Simon and Jacobson of delaying a response to RNC officials and releasing it only on the same day the information became available to the public. It also asks for an update on voter roll cleanup efforts and warns “This leads us, and others, to consider all means necessary to obtain transparency from your office.”
The letter gets the four members of Minnesota’s Republican Congressional delegation involved and asks several questions. One is regarding the exact number of people who were taken off the rolls for each category of of missing information. They’re also asking how many of those inactivated had been sent ballots and voted in a past election if eliminating any of them would have changed the outcome of past elections, and if the inactivated individuals can register and vote in the upcoming November election. It also asks directly when Simon and Jacobson plant to complete confirmation of each person’s voter registration information.
Signing onto the letter are Republican Party of Minnesota Chair David Haan and RNC Election Integrity Counsel Kevin J. Cline. Congressman Tom Emmer (CD06), Congressman Brad Finstad (CD01), Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach (CD07), and Congressman Pete Stauber (CD08) are cosignees.
Emmer said, “The Democrats have made their election playbook clear: Let over 10 million illegal immigrants into our country and allow them to vote. Minnesotans need to be able to trust in our election system, which is why we will not stop fighting to ensure that only legal citizens are voting in our elections.”
Fischbach added, “It’s incredibly concerning that non-citizens and illegal immigrants could be voting in our elections thanks to the failed leadership of Governor Walz. With early voting already underway in Minnesota, we need answers from the Walz Administration now to ensure the security of this election.”
The RNC says “While we were successful in forcing Walz’s Administration to identify and inactivate these voters, it is highly concerning that they were on the rolls in the first place. We have demanded more answers as we fight for transparency and accountability in Minnesota’s elections.”
