(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Area School District is seeing a surge in new students.

The influx of kids has pushed District 742 to its largest enrollment in five years. At 9,261, it’s a .8% increase.

Superintendent Laurie Putnam told KNSI News she’s thrilled. “We are up 80 students this year from last year, which is actually our highest enrollment since 2019.” She says they’ve been slowly adding students, but this year’s enrollment was the largest boost over that time.

Putnam explained why she thinks the student population is on the rise. “I’ve talked to families who are choosing to come back. We have families who are choosing to open enroll with us, whether it’s because of expanded [language] immersion programming or looking for extensive, rigorous AP and college level school offerings we have.”

She credits their ongoing commitment to the community, being honest and transparent when issues arise, and continuing to offer excellent academic services and extracurricular opportunities. An increase in the metro’s population is also driving growth.
