(KNSI) – Foley students harvested over 2,000 cobs of corn in just a half hour as part of the Child Nutrition Service program.

After the corn had been brought in, the kids used their flex period to husk it and prepare it for lunch. The corn husking field trip is an annual tradition in the district. Child Nutrition Service staff are tasked with providing healthy meals for district students, and they take advantage of local agriculture to meet the goal.

The district has had a Farm to School program since 2010, one of the first school systems in Minnesota to adopt one. It contracts out for fruits and vegetables, plus ingredients for made-from-scratch sauces. Even homemade bread is possible. Staff also try to source meat from local butchers.

Foley has five gardens that are planted and cared for by students in summer school, another aspect of the Farm to School program.
