(KNSI) – Governor Tim Walz has asked St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis to serve on the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board.

He’s retiring after more than three decades in public office including the last 19 as mayor and, before that, ten years in the Minnesota Senate. He also helped run congressional campaigns in his 20s. Kleis told KNSI News that he’d take lessons from all those experiences with him to the board. “[I] look at it from a perspective of somebody who has been a candidate, and [I] look at it from a perspective of somebody who has managed campaigns. And also, volunteered and then also from just a member of the public. So that’s the insight that I bring.”

Kleis told KNSI News about his reaction to the phone call requesting his expertise on the board, “I was honored to be asked and honored to serve and bring the perspective and insight that I can bring.”

The Campaign Finance Board provides oversight for financial disclosures for state and local elections, lobbyist registration, and public subsidies for state candidates and political parties. It also looks at potential ethics violations of campaign finance laws.

He will begin his term on August 2nd and continue until January 2028. This is his first time being asked to serve on a statewide board. Klies is replacing former lawmaker Margaret “Peggy” Leppik, who spent 12 years in the Minnesota House.
