(KNSI) – A Minnesota congresswoman is one of the first Democrats to say President Joe Biden should step aside in his reelection bid.

U.S. Representative Angie Craig (CD-02) took to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday to say his decades of public service are commendable and touted legislation she sponsored that he signed into law or supported but says he is no longer able to mount a campaign that can beat Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Craig wrote it was “not a decision I’ve come to lightly, but there is simply too much at stake to risk a second Donald Trump presidency. That’s why I respectfully call on President Biden to step aside as the Democratic nominee for a second term as President and allow for a new generation of leaders to step forward.”

She adds, “If we truly believe that Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans must be stopped, there is only a small window left to make sure we have a candidate best equipped to make the case and win. This future of our country is bigger than any one of us. It’s up to the President from here.”

Craig says she came to the decision during the late June debate between Trump and Biden. In particular, she found the lack of a forceful response after the debate most troubling.

Fellow Minnesota Democrat Dean Phillips (CD-03) launched a campaign to run for president, saying Biden was too old for another term and an alternative candidate was needed. He ended his bid in March,  saying it was clear the alternative was not him and threw his support behind Biden.
