(KNSI) — An off-duty Saint Paul police officer sprang into action during a family dinner, helping take down a thief.
Officer Jonathan Valencia was enjoying a meal with his family at a restaurant on White Bear Avenue when a man stole the tip jar from the restaurant counter. As restaurant staff confronted the thief, he allegedly brandished a knife and threatened to stab the staff member.
Officer Valencia quickly intervened, drawing his firearm and identifying himself as a police officer. He ordered the suspect to drop the knife, which the man did immediately. Valencia, along with staff, detained the suspect until on-duty officers arrived and took him into custody.
The suspect has since been charged with aggravated robbery by the Ramsey County Attorney’s office.
A police department statement praised the officer’s vigilance and said an incident like this underscores the unwavering commitment of St. Paul police officers who swear an oath to protect and serve. That oath doesn’t take a day off, even when police are not on duty.
