(KNSI) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has ordered flags to fly lowered in honor of a police officer killed in the line of duty.

Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell died on Thursday evening after responding to a report of shots fired at an apartment complex in the city’s Whitter neighborhood.

Walz has ordered the Stars and Stripes and state flags to fly at half-staff at all government buildings in Minnesota from sunrise to sunset on Friday.

“Minnesota mourns the loss of Officer Jamal Mitchell, a dedicated public servant and hero in his community who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his neighbors,” said Governor Walz. “”Our first responders are first to step in during crisis. We must never take their commitment for granted, and we must ensure they can answer their call of duty without fearing for their own lives. My heart is with the family and loved ones of Officer Mitchell at this time.”

Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to join in lowering their flags.
