(KNSI) – A $10.4 million road construction project in St. Cloud will lead to closures next week.
Work will begin on a nearly two-mile stretch of University Drive between County Highway 75/Roosevelt Road and 15th Avenue Southeast starting Monday.
Construction crews will shut down University Drive between Killian Boulevard and 15th Avenue Southeast to replace underground utilities and sidewalk, add a bike lane and resurface the road. The closure is expected to last until late October. Workers are also closing the intersection of University Drive Southeast and 15th Avenue Southeast until late June. Detours will be posted.
Work on University Drive from the bridge west to CR 75/Roosevelt Road will be done under traffic contol. No detour will be posted. The area will be resurfaced with sidewalk improvements and a new trail.
The city received $8.5 million from the 2023 State Transportation Policy and Finance Bill for the project. That leaves $1.9 million as the city’s portion, which taxpayers will cover.
The final bill to nearly 100 property owners along the route will be based on actual construction costs and the recently approved special benefits methodology to calculate their costs. The first bill will be due in May of 2026. Residents have about ten years to pay the city back, but that can be extended upon request.
