(KNSI) – Two of central Minnesota’s most magnificent spellers are looking to leverage their full lexicon to claim a prestigious competition near Washington, D.C.

St. Cloud North Junior High seventh grader Leyla Jacobson and Royalton eighth grader William Rausch are vying to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee. They are part of a nine-kid group representing The Land of 10,000 Lakes. They are among 245 participants from 50 states, ranging in age from eight to 15.

According to her Scripps biography, Jacobson strives for excellence in everything she does. Her biggest accomplishments include winning the Math Masters and Math Olympiad for District 742.

Rausch is returning for his second attempt at a title after finishing tied for 173rd in 2023. He’s competed on his school’s Knowledge Bowl team and has a strong interest in geography, countries and their flags.

The competition runs from Tuesday to Thursday.
