(KNSI) – The American Automobile Association expects Memorial Day weekend traffic to near the 2005 record later this month, with 43.8 million travelers visiting at least 50 miles from home.
The prediction is a 4% increase over last year. Over 38 million will take to the roads. No market in Minnesota is included in the top 10 destinations, however. Fun seems to be on Americans’ minds as AAA predicts trips to theme park-heavy Orlando, the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas, and stops on Alaskan cruises like Seattle, Washington and Anchorage.
The Twin Cities’ worst congestion is estimated at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, May 27th. The stretch on I-94 from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to Minneapolis is expected to take an hour and 47 minutes, with traffic 38% heavier than normal.
From Thursday, May 23rd, to Sunday, May 26th, AAA recommends early morning travel to avoid the rush.
