Park Improvements in Focus At Sauk Rapids Council Special Meeting

(KNSI) – Sauk Rapids City Council could take a big step towards completing Phase One of its Mayhew Creek Park project at its meeting Monday night.

The site is located near Sauk Rapids-Rice High School, and officials hope that it will eventually receive state bonding money, allowing for a football stadium and ice arena. Design began back in 2021, laying out the improvements that would be necessary to add four baseball fields.

One of those would be open weekdays for public use. The others would be reserved for the Sauk Rapids Youth Baseball Association. The group would be responsible for operations, staffing the concession stand, and cleaning the restrooms at the complex.

The SRYBA would also provide equipment and be in charge of a capital campaign for bleachers, dugouts, and scoreboards. The council could approve the operating agreement at Monday’s meeting.

Many Storm varsity teams compete now at Bob Cross Park, which is in line for improvements of its own. As part of the consent agenda, the council could agree to $160,000 for new pickleball courts. The plan allows for viewing boxes for players waiting for their turn or for spectators and friends to come out, enhancing the social experience. Each box would be fenced with benches and shade included.

The work is paid for from sales tax revenue.
