(KNSI) – St. Cloud is a popular city for Generation Z. That’s according to RentCafe’s analysis of roughly 3 million rental applications across the country in 2020.
Nationwide, 22 percent of rental applications were made by people in Generation Z. However, in St. Cloud, that percentage of Gen Z apartment applications is 40 percent, making it the top city for young renters in Minnesota. Rochester and Minneapolis are second and third, respectively, both at 26 percent.
The proportion of Gen Z renters in St. Cloud grew in 2020; in 2019, 35% of apartment applications were made by Gen Z.
RentCafe suggests that due to the pandemic and its economic impact, young renters are choosing more affordable cities versus larger metro areas. The fact that St. Cloud is home to several colleges, including St. Cloud State University, could also be a contributing factor.
The oldest members of Gen Z, born in 1997, turn 24 this year.
