(KNSI) – A St. Cloud man has been sentenced to a decade behind bars after a gun he illegally owned killed a five-year-old child.

On November 13th, 2020, police were called to St. Cloud Hospital for a child who had died after being accidentally shot in the head. Roberto Antwan Williams and his fiancĂ©, the child’s mother, were at the hospital and said they were shopping when they were called, saying the child was hurt. Williams claimed they immediately returned home and took the child to the hospital together.

Law enforcement found a video from a neighbor’s house showing the fiancĂ© taking the child while Williams placed two backpacks in a garbage bin. Investigators obtained a search warrant and found the two backpacks. Inside was a semiautomatic rifle and a pistol with an extended clip. The handgun had the child’s blood on it.

Police viewed Williams’ cell phone and found a picture of the pistol
with the text “My new toy.”

Before the child’s death, on July 31st, 2020, Williams attempted to rob a man at gunpoint outside an apartment in St. Cloud. Williams was arrested in a vehicle. Law enforcement found a gun in the glove box with his DNA on it.

On August 29th, 2023, Williams was convicted on two counts of being a felon in possession of firearms. He was sentenced on Wednesday to ten years in prison.
